The recycled post consumer plastics are of growing interest due to the environmental problems and the limited source of energy. PET is one of the most attracting materials, because the recycle ratio is highest and it has good oil resistance and toughness. In addition, it is capable of improving the mechanical properties and costing down when it blended with ABS or SAN. However, these ABS/PET alloys have to carry out drying process at high temperature before injection molding process to prevent the hydrolysis by residual water. This high temperature leads to discoloration of their virgin color. This study focus on ABS/PET alloys using recycled PET, ABS and compatibilizer and, thermo-stable system was reinforced to reduce discoloration. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed high contents of compatibilizer enhances dispersion of PET domain and reduces their size. The mechanical properties were enhanced by increasing the contents of compatibilizer. Spectrophotometer results show that discoloration is remarkably reduced. Based on the mechanical properties, recycled PET usage and low discoloration of this system, it would be a useful polymer blend as an eco-friendly plastic. |
