A series of sulfonated poly(arylene sulfone)-b-poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers containing highly sulfonated fluorenyl groups were successfully synthesized and evaluated for use as proton electrolyte membranes (PEMs). The copolymers were prepared by a three step process comprising (1) the synthesis of F-terminated poly(arylene ether sulfone) oligomer and SH-terminated poly(arylene sulfide) oligomer containing fluorenyl group, (2) the nucleophilic polycondensation reaction between F- and SH-terminated oligomers with various chain length, (3) the post-sulfonation reaction of the fluorenyl groups in the resulting multi-block copolymer using chlorosulfonic acid, followed by the oxidation reaction. The membranes were prepared by solution casting technique, and the properties of resulting cast membranes were characterized by water uptake, dimensional stability, proton conductivity, IEC, and fuel cell performance. |
