Thermoelectric (TE) power generation can contribute to solving energy crisis because it can transform waste heat into electric energy. SnSe single crystals show exceptionally high TE figure of merit (ZT) of ~2.5-2.8 around 773-923K. However, growing and processing high quality single crystal samples are lengthy and costly, thereby unsuitable for mass production of the material. However, polycrystalline SnSe samples have been largely undeveloped and performed poorer than the single crystal samples. Therefore, it is one of the utmost tasks in the TE community to achieve TE properties of polycrystalline SnSe samples comparable to or even higher than the single crystal samples. In this presentation, we study the effect of Cr doping on the polycrystalline p-type SnSe system to improve TE properties. The best composition sample shows high ZT values larger than unity around 800K. |
