The restriction on the amounts of carbon emission are being reinforced due to the worsening threats from global warming. In this respect, the production technology of bio-jet fuels is receiving much attention these days, particularly due to the large contribution of the CO2 emissions from the aviation sector. Alkylation of biomass-derived phenolic compounds with alcohols is the important class of reaction for the conversion of biomass pyrolysis oils to jet-fuel range cycloalkanes and aromatics. In this work, we have studied the reaction kinetics of the alkylation of 2-methoxyphenol with various alcohols over HY zeolites, based on the competitive C-alkylation, trans-alkylation, and O-alkylation reactions. The intrinsic rate constants for each reaction were measured, and the optimal reaction condition for maximizing the desired C-alkylation selectivity was identified. Furthermore, the crucial role of the alcohol structure in the alkylation kinetics was investigated in detail. |
