Telecommunication cable is one of the major business areas in LS C&S. Two most popular telecommunication cables may be LAN cables for internet connection, and coaxial cables for radio frequency signal transmission. Both cables need insulation materials with good dielectric properties. Generally, polyethylene (PE) is used as the insulation because of their low dielectric constant, which is as low as 2. However, the dielectric constant can be further lowered by introducing air into the insulation, since air has the lowest dielectric constant, close to 1. For this reason, foaming technology plays an important role in telecommunication cables as a tool to minimize the signal loss. The main research area of foaming technology include fine-celled foaming, low density foaming, and microcellular foaming. This paper introduces foaming technology and demonstrates how the technology has been applied to the high speed LAN cables and high performance coaxial cables in LS C&S. |
