제목 Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) Phase Transition of Acylated Branched Polyethylenimine Controls the Osmotic Pressure through CO2-Capture and Release by Mild Changes in Temperature
초록 In order to solve the water crisis researchers have tried to procure fresh water from seawater. Forward osmosis (FO) is a promising desalination method and NH4HCO3 is one of the most intensively studied draw solutes, but this system needs high thermal energy input and complicated methods for recovery. Therefore, we examined polymers with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) properties along with controlled CO2 absorption and release as an alternative. We resolved to control aqueous solubility with LCST polymers containing amine residues which can bind HCO3-, an aqueous form of CO2. The polymeric solution can absorb CO2 at low temperatures to elevate the osmotic pressure and draw water from a high-salt saline solution. It can be phase-separated to liberate CO2 by mild heating and the osmotic pressure can be effectively reduced for water release into a low-salt saline solution. The osmotic pressure-controlling system has the potential to be used as a draw solution for FO.
