Because of its outstanding advantages, such as long cycle life, safety, design flexibility, low maintenance cost, vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) have attracted considerable attention for development of large-scale energy storage system. In the VRFBs, carbon felt has generally been used as electrode materials due to its suitable porosity, good conductivity, and stability, and low cost. However, the carbon felt materials show poor reversibility and electrochemical activity for vanadium redox reactions. Therefore, it is important to develop high-performance electrode with catalysts for enhancement of electrochemical activity and cycling stability. In this work, we report a NiO decorated carbon felt electrode, which shows high wettability and electrochemical activity for vanadium electrolytes, resulting in reduced concentration and kinetic over potentials. The crystallinity and morphology of the NiO nanoparticles (NPs) on carbon felt can be controlled simply by step-wise thermal decomposition reactions of a precursor. Furthermore, we can obtain the highly uniform coating of NiO NPs on carbon felt electrode, compare to general dipping method using NiO NPs solution. |
