제목 Structure-property relationships of polymer electrolyte membranes for fuel cells
초록 Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) is one of important components in fuel cell system. High ion conductivity and excellent chemical and mechanical stabilities under fuel cell operating conditions are required for advanced PEMs. Although there is a trade-off between electrochemical performance and stability, control of polymer structure can improve both performance and stability at the same time. Perfluorosulfonic acid polymers have high proton conductivity and outstanding stabilities because of their well-defined morphology and chemical structure. However, these polymers have several disadvantages such as high cost, low glass transition temperature (Tg), and environmental issues of fluorine chemistry. To overcome these drawbacks, hydrocarbon-based polymers have been developed as alternatives to perfluorosulfonic acid polymers due to their low price and diversity of synthesis routes. Properties of PEMs depend on their chemical architecture. Therefore, advanced PEMs can be synthesized through novel polymerization and post functionalization methods with proper functional groups.
