We demonstrate a design of functionalized amphiphilic block copolymers (BCPs) to create reactive micelles. The amphiphilic functional block copolymers are BCPs consisting of hydrophobic polystyrene block and hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) block, namely P(AA-b-S), where azadibenzocyclooctyne (ADIBO) is incorporated in the hydrophilic part via post-polymerization modification. In aqueous media, we observed the formation of micelles by self-assembly of P(AA-b-S) unimers when the solution concentration was higher than the critical micelle concentration which was determined by fluorescence spectroscopy. The size of the micelle was measured using dynamic light scattering. The ADIBO groups located in an outer shell of the micelle, i.e. PAA block, can be further utilized for strain-promoted azide-alkyne click chemistry with azide functionalized molecules without additives under mild conditions. This work will open up a new promising route to create functionalizable colloidal particles. |
