Low-Bandgap Polymer Nanowires for Highly Efficient Organic Solar Cells |

Here, we report a simple and effective strategy for highly efficient polymer solar cells (PSC) using crystalline one-dimensional (1D) nanowires composed of a novel low-bandgap polymer. The donor polymer, PBDT2FBT-2EHO, which is characterized by intrinsically strong intra- and intermolecular interactions due to incorporated fluorine atoms and short alkyl chains, was newly synthesized to form 1D polymer nanowire (PNW) structures. The PNW-embedded bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) morphology of the photoactive layer, in combination with a PC71BM acceptor, was successfully developed by kinetically controlled film formation process through a simple mixing of binary solvent comprising chlorobenzene and 1-chloronaphthalene. By incorporating 1D polymer nanowires into bulk-heterojunction PSCs, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) dramatically increased from 5.2% to 8.2% with an excellent enhancement of photoconductivity in conventional single cell structures. |
