Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were produced from marine macro-algal biomass (e.g., Laminaria japonica, Pachymeniopsis elliptica, Enteromorpha crinita) and chiecken manure by anaerobic digestion using complex microorganisms. The VFAs are converted to a mixed fuel alcohol (e.g., isopropanol, 2-butanol, and 3-pentanol) by hydrogenation with a catalyst. The acids produced in the anaerobic fermentation were mainly acetic, propionic, and butyric acid. The influence of pH control, methanogen inhibitor, sludge inoculums size, substrate concentration, nutrient supplement, and pretreatment on the VFA production was investigated. |
