A molecular explosive in a polymer bound explosive (PBXs) was separated using organic solvent-mediated extraction and anti-solvent crystallization. DXC-57 and DXC-59, which were made of HMX and other components such as Estane, dioctyl adipate (DOA), and HyTemp, were used as medel PBXs. HMX was first extracted from PBXs by using an organic solvent preferentially dissolving HMX. Then HMX particles with the morphology of β-form were successfully recovered through the anti-solvent crystallization. The purity of recovered HMX particles was higher than 99%. We believe that a method for the eco-friendly recovery of HMX from obsolete munitions was developed in this study. |
