Platinum has been used for efficiently activity oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst for over a century. However, the Pt catalyst has many disadvantages of expensive, large overpotential, and limited long-term stability, which have disturbed its adoption in the fuel cell market. Therefore, cathodic ORR is an important step of low-temperature fuel cells such as proton-exchange membrane and direct methanol fuel cells. In this research, the synthesis of vertical Fe-porphyrin-like (Fe-Por) CNT forests from plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition(PECVD). Fe-Por CNT forests was investigated by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles electronic structure calculations. The resulting CNT forests show that the 5-6-5-6 porphyrinic Fe-N4 moiety was incorporated into the graphitic side wall and an excellent oxygen reduction catalytic activity with the extreme structural stability superior to the commercial Pt-C catalyst. |
