Polyimides have been widely used as a material for electro-optic devices on their own advantages such as excellent thermal property, good mechanical property and electrical property, etc. In this study, we have synthesized new hybrid films from blends of soluble polyimide and polyamic acid solution, which can be used for liquid crystal alignment layer of vertically aligned liquid crystal display (VA LCD). The soluble polyimide were synthesized from 5-(2,5-dioxotetrahydrofuryl)-3-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride [DOCDA] and functional diamine, 1-(3,5-diaminophenyl)-3-octadecyl-pyrrolidine-2,5-dione [DA-L-18IM]. The polyamic acid was prepared from 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane [MDA] and cyclobutane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic dianhydride [CBDA] in NMP. We have investigated electro-optic properties of LCD cell fabricated with the hybrid films, which showed very high pretilt angle above 88°. We have also investigated atomic composition of the hybrid film with depth and relationship of the pretilt angle with surface properties of the hybrid films. |
