제목 Saturnia japonica Cocoon: A Robust Protective Shielding via Outstanding Cohesive Property of Sericin
초록 The cocoon of wild silkworm Saturnia japonica (SJ) exhibits a distinctive morphology compared to the Bombyx mori (BM) cocoon such as, tanned color, macroporous and open-ended structure. Herein, we measured the mechanical strength of SJ and BM cocoon, then the SJ cocoon performs outstanding mechanical property. Hence, we extracted a SJ sericin which is a hardening component of cocoon and measured the interaction forces between sericin nanofilms using a surface forces apparatus (SFA) in aqueous solution with various pHs. The measured cohesion energy between SJ sericin was ~150% higher than that of BM sericin with gradual increases regarding a higher pH and contact time. The pH dependent cohesive force indicates a possibility upon the increase in number of binding sites due to the sericin rearrangement and/or conformation change. Beyond our current grasp the SJ sericin possess a superior cohesive property, and suggest it could be used for eco-friendly biomaterials or adhesive binders.
