Nowadays, a variety of polymers with narrow molecular weight distribution and complex chain architectures, including branching and blocking, are prepared by controlled polymerization methods. They are employed in various studies, with the information on the molecular characteristics determined by conventional SEC, however, this information is sometimes not sufficiently accurate for the studies. Complex polymers usually have multivariate distributions in various molecular properties. To characterize multiple, mutually dependent distributions, multi-dimensional separations are of critical importance. To characterize any two dependent distributions, it is necessary to combine two different separation mechanisms in a two- dimensional liquid chromatography (2DLC) system. In this presentation, various methods of 2DLC separation and their applications in synthetic polymers are discussed. |
