Blends of polypropylene (PP) with polyamides (PAs) are interesting because they allow the thermomechanical properties of the PAs to be combined with the processability of the PP. Proper compatibilizations are required for this blend to have satisfactory performance by getting over the incompatibility between the components. In this study, PP/PA12 blends with halloysite nanotube (HNT) were prepared by a melt mixing in an internal mixer. The morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of the blend nanocomposites were investigated by SEM, DSC, DMA, tensile testing and impact testing, respectively. Results showed that addition of small amount (0.5~1.5wt%) of HNTs induced a reduction in the dispersed phase particles along with great enhancement in tensile strength, modulus, elongation-at-break as well as Izod impact strength than unfilled blend, indicating that HNT acts as a compatibilizer for the immiscible PP/PA12 blend. |
