Hydrogel which had 3-D network structure was prepared from AA clay and acrylic acid by gamma ray irradiation at adequate temperature. Most conventional polymerization requires the initiator or crosslinker, but the AA clay was used as initiator and cross-linker to make hydrogel, so we don’t need any additional additives to make hydrogel. Acid activated clay (AA clay) was prepared by 6M sulfuric acid. After acid treatment, AA clay mineral had different chemical composition and especially silicon oxide content was increased. It also developed a high specific surface area and still had the ability to adsorb organic molecules, so it could be used as precursor for clay-polymer-nanocomposites. Due to the high specific surface area of AA clay, the hydrogel with AA clay had better performance compared with hydrogel with raw clay. The synthesized hydrogel can be elongated approximately maximum 1000% and it shows 76% of gelation. |
