Synthesis of high molecular weight star-shaped SAN copolymers by ARGET ATRP |

Normal atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has limitations of high molecular weight styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymers due to the involvement of outer-sphere electron-transfer (OSET) reactions. Activator regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET) ATRP is a new way to reduce concentrations of catalyst in the system and allows a suppression of OSET reactions. In this study, high molecular weight star-shaped SAN copolymers were synthesized by ARGET ATRP. Polymerization was carried out with CuBr2/Me6TREN/Sn(EH)2 complex as catalytic system at 80℃ in anisole. The resulting polymer with a high molecular weight (Mn ~ 200,000) was synthesized when 0.3 equiv of Cu(II) vs initiator was used. The molecular structure of star-shaped SAN copolymers was confirmed by SEC-MALLS analysis. |
