New Nafion binder solution using a different organic solvent is prepared and applied to a polymer electrolyte membrane based fuel cell. To confirm the effect of the new binder, wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and polarization of fuel cell are carried out for the determination of crystallinity of Nafion binder film, cell resistance, and fuel cell performance. New Nafion binder film using home-made Nafion solution shows a lower dissolution than the recast Nafion film using commercial Nafion solution in methanol solution (2M) mixture. It is found that the low dissolution of home-made Nafion binder film is due to more developed crystalline morphology. This can lead to good structural integrity in the catalyst layer for long-term operation of fuel cell. |
