In the present study, attention has been focused on the intercalation of alkyl carboxylate (CnH2n+1COONa, n=5~17) into botallackite-type layer structured compound. The pristine basic copper hydroxide acetate was prepared by a newly developed refluxing process. According to XRD and SEM observation, thus prepared Cu2(OH)3(CH3COO)·H2O has a basal spacing (d001) of 9.2 Å and a well-developed hexagonal plate-like shape, respectively. The interlayer acetate ions located between the positively charged copper hydroxide layers were exchanged with long chain alkyl carboxylates. Upon intercalation, the interlayer spacing increased linearly with the alkyl chain length (n), according to the reaction d(Å)=1.26n+12.01 implying that the alkyl chains were stacked in monolayers and most likely orientated normal to the layers. |
