This study demonstrates the utility of nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS)-based 3D plotting as a novel SFF technique for the production of 3-dimensionally macrochanneled poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds with porous core/ dense shell structure. In particular, a PCL/acetone solution was deposited in an EtOH bath to rapidly solidify PCL filaments with a highly porous structure through exchange of acetone solvent and EtOH nonsolvent. By adding the water in the EtOH coagulation bath, dense shell are formed on the outside of the PCL filaments and as the water content increases in the coagulation bath, the thickness of the dense shell increases. The mechanical properties of the scaffolds, measured by tensile strength tests, increased with an increase in the thickness of dense shell of PCL filaments. |
