Idarubicin is a potent anti-cancer agent for the treatment of different types of cancer such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia and advanced breast cancer. However, it has major drawbacks, e.g., a poor solubility in water and a high toxicity. With the intention of increasing the solubility of the drug, reducing its toxicity, and delivering it into the body at specific sites, we encapsulated it by the protein apoferritin that allows a pH-modulated encapsulation. The supramolecularly encapsulated products were characterized by UV-Vis, fluorescence, and CD spectroscopy and the cytotoxicity was assessed by the MTT assay. |
