Plant-derived monoterpenoids have shown to possess various biological effects, providing a scientific base for their potential usage as antibacterial agents. Therefore, considering problems surrounding bacteria’s antibacterial resistance, utilization of natural antimicrobial compounds such as monoterpenoids in different industries have gained much attention. The aim of this study was to fabricate and characterize various concentrations of plant derived monoterpenoids, geraniol and carvacrol, loaded to poly(lactic acid) nanofibers via emulsion electrospinning. Carvacrol and geraniol showed potent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis strains. A 10 wt% carvacrol loaded electrospun web had the most bactericidal activity, with the widest inhibition zone of 5.26 cm. Overall, this study found that poly(lactic acid) loaded with carvacrol, or geraniol, is a promising antibacterial system for improving fiber functionality. |
