Design and implementation of microalgae-based integrated biorefinery |

Questions around the economic feasibility of microalgae-based products have remained not fully addressed as challenges from contamination in large-scale industrial cultivation systems to high energy costs associated with downstream processes prevail. Researchers and practitioners in the field are thus actively exploring biorefinery approaches, through which whole biomass is utilized in multiple commercialization routes. To this end, two ideas have been explored following the extraction of hydrophobic fractions of biomass, including carotenoids: (1) saccharification of residual deoiled microalgal biomass, the process that could be combined with the fermentation of other microbes (2) filler material application of left-over residual biomass in the fabrication of plastic composites. The results indicated that each of these approaches has a potential to bolster the overall economic outlook of microalgae-based biorefinery, while a careful techno-economic assessment would be needed. |
