Critically colonized or locally infected wound by microorganisms can have additional consequences including increased pain and discomfort, a delay in return to normal activities, and the possibility of a life-threatening illness. Thus, many wound dressings containing antimicrobial agents have been developed to control wound pathogens. Here, a bilayer wound dressing, consisting of a titanium oxide (TiO2)-incorporated chitosan electrospun sheet (upper-layer) and an extracellular matrix (ECM) sheet (sub-layer), has been designed. In vitro and in vivo tests, the TiO2-chitosan layer was effective for preventing microbial penetration into wounds, and the ECM layer provided space to absorb the exudate of wound and microenvironment favorable to the infiltration and growth of neighbor cells, thereby accelerating wound healing. This result suggests that the TiO2-incorporated chitosan/ECM bilayer sheet could be a promising wound dressing with antimicrobial and wound healing effects. |
