Despite the lower power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) compared to inorganic ones, OSCs have attracted great attention as an alternative, green energy source because of many advantages such as solution-processability, mechanical flexibility and easy structural modification, etc. Recently, bulk hetero junction (BHJ) OSCs based on blended n- and p-type organic semiconductors have achieved a PCE over ~13%. However, the BHJ blends often suffer from phase separation during device operation, deteriorating the device stability. To overcome this problem, we designed and synthesized a new acceptor–donor–acceptor (A-D-A) type π-conjugated molecule combined with a fullerene derivative via alkyl chain spacer as a photoactive material for single component OSCs. In this contribution, the molecular design, synthesis and characterization of this new type of photoactive material will be presented in detail. |
