Chemical structure-dependent thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of mesophase pitches |

Mesophase pitch is one of the most suitable precursor for high performance carbon fibers and commercialized by Toray and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical. In spite of successful development, only limited information on the physical properties of the pitch is available due to the irregularity of the molecule components. Hence, it has a practical importance to relate the morphological properties and liquid crystalline behavior to the chemical structure of the mesophase pitches. Two commercial mesophase pitches, M-AR and T-MP, were comparatively evaluated. The NMR result informed that M-AR consisted of linear semi-rigid molecules and T-MP, irregularly shaped rigid molecules. Between 320 and 370oC M-AR exhibited marble texture while T-MP, a change from schlieren/marble to schlieren texture. WAXD results indicated that M-AR showed a gradual change of d002 and Lc with temperature but T-MP, a drastic change. Both mesophase pitches showed viscosity curves matched with the Asada-Onogi model. |
