Biomass conversion to value-added chemicals has been received a considerable attention for the development of sustainable industries. Herein, one-pot, direct conversion of furfural to 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PDO) was investigated over a Ni–Co mixed metal oxide catalyst in a liquid phase under H2 pressure. The catalyst was synthesized using co-precipitation method with variable ratios of NaOH and Na2CO3. The reaction was conducted at 160 °C over 3 MPa and 8 h. Surface modification using different ratios of NaOH and Na2CO3 could increase the selectivity of ring opening of furfuryl alcohol to 1,5-PDO. Under optimized reaction condition, complete conversion of furfural to 48.5% yield 1,5-PDO was achieved. Nickel could facilitate the hydrogen dissociation. These assumptions based on H2-TPD data; H2 spillover could occur at Ni0. The electronic behavior studied using H2-TPR and XPS; charge transfer from CoOx to Ni could reduce the Ni reduction temperature. |
