Refractive index controllable new inorganic-organic sol-gel materials |

In the recent years, much attention has been given on sol-gel based inorganic-organic hybrid materials using various organic functional groups in the precursors for the incorporation into inorganic matrix leading to desirable optical as well as electrical properties. An inorganic-organic hybrid consisting 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, diphenylsilanediol (DPSD) and zirconium-propoxide with acetic anhydride (ZPAA) was prepared by modified conventional sol-gel process. The condensation of the precursors forming the hybrid was observed by FTIR and 29Si NMR spectroscopic studies. The thermal stability of the hybrid dependent upon the ZPAA content which is one of the key factors to control the refractive index of the good quality hybrid film prepared on quartz glass and silicon wafer at 120oC baking temperature. The microstructure of the films was analyzed by SEM. Depending upon the ZPAA and DPSD content, the refractive index (RI) of the films at 632.8 nm varied widely and reached at 1.584. The RI also changed little for the films baked at higher temperature as well as thickness. |
