Thermo-responsible shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) is a smart material that can respond to external heat by changing its macroscopic shape from a temporary configuration to a memorized permanent one. This presentation will be organized to report a novel finding that two-way shape memroy behavior can be imparted to SMPUs using a thermo-mechanical treatment. Then, the constitutive modeling of SMPUs will be presented. SMPUs feature the segmented structure,i.e., the molecular configuration of their hard and soft segments; the latter can form a variable state ranging from a rubbery to rigid phase according to temperature, while the former undergoes little deformation and acts as a fixed net between the soft segments. A three-phase phenomenological model was developed to describe the deformation behavior of SMPUs according to their micro-structure and implemented in a finite element software through a user material subroutine to simulate their mechanical behavior. |
