Structure, drug-release behavior and hydrolytic degradation of biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/polyhedralsilisesquioxane(POSS) nanocomposites |

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(POSS) is attracting interest as a new class of nanomaterials that can be combined with polymers to improve their performance properties. In this study, we prepared a PCL/trisilanolphenylPOSS(TspPOSS) nanocomposite film and a corresponding drug-loaded film by a solution blending followed by solvent casting. WAXD and FE-SEM analysis showed that TspPOSS are dispersed uniformly as nanocrystals in the PCL matrix, which resulted in improved mechanical properties of the PCL. In vitro drug release studies using theophylline as a model drug showed a slower and more continuous release for the nanocomposite films as compared with pure PCL film, and the drug-delivery cumulative release was proportional to the amount of POSS. It was also observed that POSS can increase hydrolytic degradation rate of the PCL, which was examined by SEM and DSC. Such biodegradable PCL/POSS nanocomposites with a sustained drug release may find various biomedical applications. |
