A unique Synthetic Methodology via Living Anionic Polymerization for Concurrent Synthesis of Linear and Radial Block copolymers of Styrene and Isoprene |

A unique methodology was applied for the synthesis of three different block copolymers, di-, tri-, and three-armed star-block of styrene and isoprene via living anionic polymerization by controlling the molar ratios of initiator to a novel coupling agent. During the polymerization process, well defined linear and radial block copolymers at room temperature with almost 100% yield resulted, when the living di-block of poly(styrene-b-isoprene) was coupled using malonyl chloride. The individual block copolymers illustrate narrow polydispersity index (PDI=1.01-1.05) and the calculated and observed molecular weights are in good agreement. This was also confirmed by fractionation of the various block copolymers by reversed-phase temperature gradient interaction chromatography (RP-TGIC) technique and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The results of these highly interesting findings will be highlighted in the presentation. |
