Stimuli-responsive hydrogel microtubes generated by microfluidic devices for cellular scaffolds |

In this study, we prepared microfiber and microtube hydrogels by using a microfluidic device with alginate-templated photopolymerization. Alginate templates containing N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) and sodium acrylate (SA) or allyl amine (AA) was irradiated with UV light to invoke in situ photo-polymerization. Poly(NIPAm) is a well-known polymer which exhibited lower critical solution temperature behavior. Furthermore, the addition of SA or AA groups were used to induce the pH responsive property because of the repulsive force by protonation/deprotonation of the acrylate or amine groups, respectively. We found that the stimuli-responsive volume change of the prepared microfibers and mictubes are fully reversible and repeatable. In addition, positively charged surface of the hydrogel micro-objects enhanced the attachment of living cells through the ionic attraction. Furthermore, we found that the number of cells can be increased by further supplying of the nutrient. |
