Iodine-substituted diacetylene amphiphiles were newly designed and synthesized to fabricate coatable thin film polarizers. The mixture of the synthesized diacetylene amphiphiles and 4,6-decadiyne shows lyotropic liquid crystal phase in specific mixing ratios and can be uniaxially oriented by simple shear coating. Subsequent topochemical polymerization makes the stabilized thin film polarizers on macroscale. The prepared polarizers show significantly high degree of polarization above 98% at 639 nm. Utilizing the polarizers, liquid crystal displays and antireflective film for OLED displays were successfully demonstrated.
