Many efforts have been made to developed highly tough hydrogels with new approaches, including double network (DN) hydrogel, nanocomposite hydrogel, slide-ring hydrogel, etc. In this study, chemically crosslinked poly(aspartic acid), PASP, gel was prepared by cryogelation of polysuccinimide, the precursor polymer, in DMSO and subsequent hydrolysis process under pH9 buffer. The resulting superporous PASP gel was soaked in Fe+3-containing aqueous solution to induce secondary ionic crosslinking between carboxylic acid and metal cation. The final dual network hydrogel possessed very high mechanical strength and toughness. The preparation, swelling behavior, morphology and mechanical properties are presented. |
