Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a tumor ablation technique that kills cancer cells through a strong pulsed electric field. Since the IRE is a non-thermal ablation procedure, it has the advantage of not damaging surrounding normal tissues and blood vessels as compared to conventional thermal ablation. However, intra-tumoral delivery of uneven electric fields limits the therapeutic efficacy and causes recurrence. In this study, we developed multifunctional core-shell nanoparticles capable of image-guided delivery and effectively transferring the electric field into the tumor site. Magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and coated with a highly conductive gold shell. In vitro cell experiments shown that the effect of IRE increased when nanoparticles are treated in cancer cells. Taken together, the core-shell nanoparticles can significantly improve the effect of the existing the IRE technology and have a great potential to be used with image-guided techniques. |
