Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Recently, immunotherapy with immune cell therapeutics has emerged as a potential strategy for HCC treatment. In the cancer immunotherapy, infiltration of immune cells into cancer tissues is essential for effective cancer treatment. Here, we demonstrated immunomodulatory microspheres (IMM-MS) for tumor specific infiltration of immune cells with an image guidance. The IMM-MS was composed of PLGA as a biocompatible polymer, iron oxide nanoparticles as an MR contrast agent, and immunomodulatory protein agents. In the VX2 rabbit model, IMM-MS were successfully infused under X-ray DSA guidance and MRI confirmed selective transcatheter delivery of the IMM-MS to the targeted liver tumors. In the immunohistochemistry analyses, a significant enhancement of immune cell infiltration was observed in the IMM-MS treated group. |
