Removal of metal ions using non-ionic amphiphilic nanopolymer particles in micellar enhanced ultrafiltration |
초록 |
Surfactant-based process such as micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) was recently proposed to remove multivalent metal ions from aqueous streams because of the synergetic effect of two techniques such as reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration which showed the high selectivity and flux, respectively. However, the MEUF had the detrimental effects such as micelle breakage, loss of surfactant and ineffectiveness in the MEUF process when surfactant molecules were below critical micelle concentration (CMC). Thus, to overcome the disadvantages of the MEUF, micelle-like non-ionic amphiphilic nanopolymer particles (NANPs) were applied to the system, forming the nano-sized micelle at the low concentration. The NANP particles used in this study have hydrophilic groups on the surface and a hydrophobic backbone in their core, in the result of a microphase-separated structure similar to that of surfactant micelles. When ANP particles are dispersed in water, the outer hydrophilic groups stabilize the particles by extending into the aqueous phase. In particular, the NANPs were cross-linked to enhance their stability for removing various metal ions from the wastewater. The rejection ratio of metal ions was investigated in the various valance metal ions as the functions of trans-membrane pressure and concentrations of the NANPs and metal ions in comparison with the normal surfactants. |
