The membrane technology has experienced an unprecedented market growth in the past few decades, driven by continuous improvements in membrane fabrication, module standardization, and process optimization. Most of the new desalination plants coming online are now membrane-based, and ultrafiltration and microfiltration membranes are now considered as proven & mature technologies with reliable performance. The aforementioned processes, ironically unfortunate for membrane researchers, are now mature and the relevant industries drive the market. Nevertheless, the scope of membrane technology is much wider now, and new exciting applications are appearing on the horizon. In this presentation, some of the emerging application fields using membrane technology will be discussed, mainly in solvent filtration and biomedical applications. |
