A photoisomerizable side-chain liquid crystal polysiloxane containing cyanostilbene (CSP) was newly designed and synthesized to develop photo-induced secret paint. Its flexible backbone allows CSP to have smectic liquid crystal phase at a wide and low temperature range and to be photoisomerized easily at room temperature. The photoisomerization of CSP leads to optical changes in transmittance and luminescence. In addition, CSP can be cured by the self-crosslinking reaction with Pt catalyst. Utilizing these properties of CSP, photo-induced secret and photopatterned optical coatings were demonstrated. This study can be applied to security paints and provides a new method to fabricate multifunctional polymer networks.
