Self-healing coatings have the ability of autonomic healing of the damaged region. There is no report on low-temperature self-healing while the self-healing systems reported so far have been evaluated at room temperature. We have developed low-temperature (-20~0℃) self-healing protective coating using a silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (STP) as a healing agent and dibutyltin dilaulate (DD) as a catalyst. STP-containing microcapsules and DD-containing microcapsules are separately prepared, and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The microcapsules were blended into commercial enamel paint to obtain a self-healing coating. The self-healing coatings were stored and scratched at –20℃ in a low temperature chamber. It was demonstrated by anticorrosion test, saline solution permeability test and optical microscopy that the scratched region was repaired. |
