Among network polymers, polyrotaxane networks having rotaxane structures as the cross-linking points are the most intriguing class of cross-linked polymers which are characterized in terms of both unique structure and specific properties, based on their movable polymer chains. Since cyclodextrin (CD)-based polyrotaxane networks always require the pre-synthesis of corresponding polyrotaxanes, synthesis of CD-based polyrotaxane networks without pre-synthesis of polyrotaxanes has been strongly desired. In this paper, we discuss excellent property of thermo-responsive hydrogel prepared from a supramolecular cross-linker composed of a-CD oligomer and a macromonomer that was used in the polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide. The obtained hydrogel showed very high level of thermo-responsibility such as quick volume shrinkage by heating and quick transparent-opaque change by cooling-heating operation, which was accompanied by the hydrophobic-hydrophilic surface property change. |
