Terpyridine-attached viologen, TpyV, was synthesized in which the electron-rich terpyridine is attached at one end of the electron-deficient viologen, and was demonstrated the electrochromic properties of the single-layered electrochromic devices (ECDs). We have observed the enhanced electrochromic features of TpyV ECDs, including fast switching, high color contrast (∆%T 64%), excellent stability (up to 360 cycles), and higher coloration efficiency (232.87 cm2/C) even in the absence of ferrocene (Fc). The absence of Fc allowed a clear advantage over the conventional ECDs that appeared yellowish. Furthermore, Bromide ions of TpyV were exchanged with BF4-(TpyV2), PF6-(TpyV3), and TFSI- ions (TpyV4). In the current study, due to the retarded ionic movement in the hydrophobic medium of ion gel, the anion exchanged TpyV2-4 ECDs showed the optical memory effect from delayed bleaching and poor the kinetic stabilities. Among these ECDs, TpyV2 showed the optical memory effect for up to 30 min. |
