The purpose of this work was to investigate the role of hydrophilic–lipophilic balance (HLB) of surfactants on the morphology and size of HMX. The HMX crystals were prepared by a combined cooling and anti-solvent crystallization procedure. In this study, combined hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (CHLB) numbers 4.3, 6.98, 9.65, 12.33, and 15 were obtained, by varying the %w/w of Span 80 and Tween 80 in the form (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100 %w/w) respectively. The HMX crystals ranged between 15 – 50 µm as the mixture containing, propylene carbonate (solvent), water (antisolvent) with a ratio 80:20 and 90:10 %w/w respectively is rapidly cooled. Dimensions and morphology of the crystals is examined using particle size distribution and optical and scanning electron microscopes. |
