Synthesis and Characterization of Poly(phenylene) based electolyte via Diels-Alder polymerization for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell |

A series of sulfonated poly(phenylene)-based electrolytes were synthesized using 4,4'-(1,4-phenylene)-bis(2,3,5-triphenylcyclopenta-2,4-dienone) and 4,4'-sulfonyl-bis(ethynylbenzene) by Diels-Alder polymerization, and followed sulfonation with chlorosulfuric acid. The resulting polymer was structured by carbon-carbon and sulfonyl group in main chain, which is resulting chemically oxidative stable under water and hydrogen peroxide generating by H2/O2. The structural properties of the resulting polymers will be studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The membrane properties will be characterized by water uptake, ion exchange capacity and proton conductivity. |
