Polyisocyanates are fascinating polymers due to their biomimicing nature and dynamic helical conformations. But their synthesis condition is limited due to rapid trimerization reaction and difficulty in controlling molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. We achieved the living nature in polymerization of n-hexyl isocyanate (HIC) using various additives by living anionic polymerization. Initiators like sodium benzanilide (NaBA) gave excellent control in polymerization of HIC, which serves dual function of controlled initiation and efficient protection of the living chain-ends. Several oxy anion initiators were also developed for controlling isocyanates polymerization. Using these controlled systems, various rod-coil, di- and tri-block copolymers of HIC were synthesized with different monomers, and their self-assembly in different solvents was studied. Optically active polyisocyanates were also synthesized by introducing chiral moiety at the end of the polymer chain. |
