Structures and properties of emulsions are affected by various factors such as surfactant type, stirring condition, temperature and pH through the whole preparation process. Surfactant can be classified into 4 types, like anionic-, cationic-, amphoteric- and nonionic-surfactants. Nonionic surfactant is less sensitive to pH change and easy to control the solubility during synthesis. This study is focused on effect of nonionic surfactant on W/O emulsion properties. Typically, W/O emulsion can be made using a nonionic surfactant of low HLB (Hydrophilic Lipophilic Balance). Using various nonionic surfactants, we prepared W/O emulsions and observed particle size, viscosity and surface tension according to the types of surfactant. |
