Chemotherapy is commonly utilized to treat all stages cancer, including early and metastatic stages. It is well-known that the systemic chemotherapy leads to serious side effect due to its toxicity. To address this, anti-cancer drug-loaded polymer system has been frequently used to treat the cancer as a local delivery system. However, the insufficient drug uptake in cancer cells (hydrophobic drug), burst release of drug in applied site (water-soluble drug), the potential side effects of the used biomaterials, and the technical difficulty to fabricate the matrix remain as inevitable obstacles for clinical applications. In this study, we prepared ion-complexed doxorubicin which can allow sustain release of the anti-cancer drug even though its water-soluble character, and thus can be an appropriate local delivery system for the treatment of cancer. The mechanism of the ion complex formation, drug release behavior, and anti-cancer effect of the ion-complexed drug were investigated. |
