The perylene diimide derivative (PDD) was newly synthesized for the fabrication of oriented thin film polarizer. The phase behaviour and optical property of PDD were investigated using microscopic, scattering, and spectroscopic analyses. From the X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy, it was found that molecular self-assembly of PDD is due to the face to face π-π intermolecular interaction and phase separation between hydrophilic ionic and hydrophobic aromatic groups. The uniaxially patterned film was prepared by mechanically shearing and photopolymerization process on the flexible polymer substrates. The polarizability of oriented PDD film was estimated to be 99% at λmax = 491nm through polarized UV-vis spectroscopy. Also chemical and mechanical stability of PDD film was confirmed using solvent and pencil hardness tests, and surface morphology were investigated by OM, AFM, and 3D nanoprofiler.
